i’d really like to see an upside down version of a typical crossdressing drama, where the girl disguised as a boy ends up with another girl instead of a boy

but idk, crossdressing dramas (Coffee Prince, Ouran, most versions of Hana Kimi) really really really appeal to me because

i guess what i mean is, crossdressing dramas are this… representation of queer identity that not only can i identify with and relate to very strongly, but are pretty normalized in the context of their genre? especially for dramas like Coffee Prince, where the girl dresses like a guy from the beginning and rather than starting when she gets the “prince” barista job, she just continues, with a little added secret-keeping. and Ouran, where she just happens to look like a dude at the beginning because she didn’t have a uniform yet and she got gum in her hair and it didn’t bother her when people thought she was a boy.

Hana Kimi is a lot more something something? queer-bait, maybe. the main character is more MPDG, at least in the manga, but in the Korean drama while she is there to benefit the main male character she isn’t there to like… confess love or anything. she just feels like she owes him and wants to help him?????? PLUS THE MASSIVE SEXUAL TENSION AND ADORABLE EUN GYUL SPENDING ALL HIS TIME FAWNING OVER A DUDE AND HAVING SAME-SEX WEDDING FANTASIES SIGH SIGH SIGH

she had roughly 32470397010381370982% more agency and directly-plot-related use than Chekov, who seemed to mostly be in the movie to be adorable, deliver TOS homage punchlines, and at one point catch people. the catching thing was the only time i remember him doing anything except being flustered, adorable, and (SERIOUSLY) pretty useless.

Carol Marcus identified a serious problem which she had to have very objective reasoning skills to figure out - she had to doubt her father, who she loved and respected, and doubt him so much she had to do something about it. she had the agency to get on the ship in secret and the intelligence and sneakiness to get on with literally nothing but a Vulcan’s weird hunch that caught her. she has a doctorate in what appears to be Exploding Space Magic, specifically the kind of Exploding Space Magic which we’re accustomed to seeing in the domain of some big buff dudebro. she figured out the torpedoes. she attempted to sacrifice her life to save the Enterprise and its crew from her own father.

like okay, whatever, you don’t like her. i don’t give a fuck, to be honest her personality didn’t make much of a mark on me either. but don’t feed me this “most useless” line and expect me to swallow it. she’s white and skinny and beautiful and practically engineered to be (physically) non-threatening and those are all irritating facts but her worth to the plot cannot simply be boiled down to OTP Cock Blocker or Underwear Lady.
