OKAY FIRST the first band will ALWAYS NEED to be 2NE1. CL and Minzy are god’s gift to my life — CL is kind of like a Korean Nicki Minaj and Minzy is this incredible dancing rapping beast. I Am The Best, Hate You, Fire, Follow Me, Pretty Boy, Scream, and I’m Busy are all fantastic songs to start with — bonus, I Am The Best and Hate You both have incredibly awesome/addicting music videos. I’m Busy is one of the most addicting dance songs I’ve ever heard in my life.
For dude bands I really like SHINee — the first single of theirs I heard was Sherlock, but you should definitely listen to Lucifer, Ready Or Not, Get Down (a Korean rap song that was written and performed by two of the members of the group OMG the first rapper on the track is Minho and he’s amazing), and Ring Ding Dong is sooo fucking amazing partly because it’s hilarious but you will also want to dance everywhere I’M SERIOUS.
I’ve also started listening to a lot of Miss A — Over U was the first song that grabbed me, but No Mercy blows it out of the water. Lips and Touch are also super good, and those are just four songs from the same EP. I’m still collecting singles in my KPop Youtube playlist, ha ha haaa
Girls Generation (also called SNSD) is kind of a classic? Oh! was the first KPop song I ever listened to, and it’s hilarious and adorable and sooo incredibly pink and bubblegum girly. (The lyrics translate to something about wanting to get with “older brother,” but the word “oppa” in Korean is just used to basically mean “older male person” in this context so DON’T BE TOO CREEPED OUT is the story there.) Gee is kind of annoying but might be necessary for your total KPop education, although Trick, Run Devil Run, and The Boys are all legitimately great songs. I can’t figure out why The Boys isn’t playing in every night club everywhere in the US. Seriously. SERIOUSLY LISTEN TO IT.
I’ve heard a lot of good things about Abracadabra, Brown Eyed Girls, Big Bang, and Super Junior, but 2NE1 and SHINee are easily my top two with Miss A and Girls Generation following behind.
